Spinal Biologics

Biologics are a new trend in medicine, particularly in the area of orthopedic surgery. Spinal Biologics are materials that change their surrounding environment through active cellular processes that promote growth and differentiation, which aid in repair and healing of the injury or condition. They are designed for use as an alternative to traditional treatments. Some Biologics are intended for use as replacements for metal hardware and an individual’s natural bone graft (allograft), while others under development will promote repair and regeneration of cartilaginous and bony structures.

Spinal Biologics that have received FDA approval and are now in use include:

  • Artificial disc replacement materials
  • BMP’s (bone morphogenetic proteins)
  • Bone marrow stem cells

Some of the Spinal Biologics currently being investigated are:

  • Biologic disk repair: This type of therapy involves injecting a substance into the disk, which will promote healing and restoration of normal function. These injectables have yet to receive FDA approval and include protein-based and cell-based therapies.
  • Spinal cord implants: these implants can be placed in the damaged area of the spinal cord, and are designed to provide support to the area.
  • New materials that allow for improved bone growth in the cages that contain the bone graft used in spinal fusion surgery.
  • Gene therapy techniques that can hopefully eliminate fusions, while preserving the spinal column motion necessary for normal daily physical function.
  • Could not stop Substances that promote nerve regeneration, particularly in the presence of spinal cord injury.

Spinal Biologics have the potential to reduce the frequency of primary or additional surgical procedures, which will lead to decreased disruption of soft tissue and faster recovery times. The current time is an exciting one in the field of orthopedics, as continual advancements in spine treatment and surgery are showing promise in providing ever-improving care for individuals with acute and chronic conditions.
